Tips For Starting Your Own Blog

Bob B. Hamilton asked:

Are you hoping to start down the road to internet success? Among the simplest ways to get into online content provision for any reason is to start a blog. Blogs (short for the now-archaic term “weblogs”) are journal-style websites updated on at least a semi-regular basis with fresh information. Blogs generally include a way for readers to comment, as well as a blogroll, space for ads, links to sites of interest, and other small tools that the blog’s creator either finds necessary or of use to his readers.

It’s simple to set up a blog. Start with an idea: something you want to write about, and that you have the passion and creativity to write about every day or every week for the foreseeable future. Let’s assume you’re an amateur mechanic. You could do a blog on cars in general, but that information is out there already. Instead, narrow it down to a blow-by-blow account of the finding and reconstruction of the beautiful Shelby Mustang you bought last month. That is specific, an item you can be passionate about, an item that will garner interest, and something you’ll have new information for on a regular basis.

But why should you start the blog? Maybe you’re tired of all your friends calling you for advice on where to pick up an original carburetor. Or maybe you want to share your information and maybe, someday, put together a book on how to rebuild one of these sleek machines. Or maybe you just want to share your passion with an audience just as passionate as you. Or you have an automotive shop and want to show people that you’re a real expert.

All these are valid reasons for creating a blog. But there’s one other thing you need to know: a blog is also a revenue-generation tool in itself. As those who are on the road to internet success know a smart blogger will learn about PPC advertising, affiliate sales, self-publishing ebooks, and other monetization methods for online marketing, and open up a whole new revenue stream while pursuing a passion.

Once you have a niche and a plan, you need to set up your blog. You can use a variety of free services or set one up on your own server more easily than you think. Free already-there blog sites include Wordpress (no advertising allowed on their site) and Blogger (advertise all you want and keep the revenue). If you’d rather host your blog at your own website, talk to your hosting provider to see what you need to do to install Wordpress or a similar service on your site.

It’s also easy to install themes on your blog, or you can hire someone to create a custom theme for you on the cheap. Once you have the blog set up and its look determined, all you have to do is log in and post on a regular basis. Get your blog up and running, make your regular posts and you are one step closer to the road to internet success.

Those who are on the road to internet success know that blogs aren’t all good. You are tied to a regular production schedule, and even though you can pre-set articles to post later, it can be stressful to know that you need to maintain that blog. It also takes a while to build an audience and most pro bloggers advise that you wait until you reach a critical mass of about a thousand people before running advertising on your blog because so many blogs out there are just Google bait.

Still, your blog is your voice, and can be just as unique and individual as that voice. If you want to get into the world of Web communication and make a little money as well, creating a good blog may be the way to go. A blog can be one more valuable piece of the puzzle as you move down the road to internet success.
